Listen to the voice of rationality when it comes to matters so trivial as to expend only the tiniest bit more of your dopamine stores. One more one more one more one more. Recognize that the best of the best stop while they are ahead and going that extra mile on a trivial matter is a sure-fire way of draining the energy of the day by that smidgen more.

When it comes to deep work, set the larger block for 3 hours, at this point directly question your ability to continue. Often the extra 20 minutes to an extra hour take more energy from you than the 3 hours combined. This is cyclic as with all things. Some days can take more than others.

Deep work in flow is the prime state for real work and real leverage in the direction you have chosen, it is only sustainable with recovery, constantly and consistently pushing it will lead into sickness and dis-ease. The body will force you to rest if you decide to abstain for so long.

Quality of time spent > Quantity of time spent.

The extra 40 minutes of work goes very little in the way of breaking the line. Those consistent 3 hour blocks of deep work leaving you just satisfied and rested with the effort… that is where the key lies.
